Banji Pagoda

Banji pagoda was originally built in the 4th year of the Qingning era (1058) during the reign of Emperor Daozong of the Liao Dynasty. Constructed of green bricks in an octagonal, seven-story solid “ornamental pagoda” style, it is one of the few remaining examples of Liao Dynasty Ornamental pagodas.

Significance

Banji pagoda originally got its name from banjiu (turtle doves) that used to perch on the pagoda’s summit (now damaged), leading people to call it the “Banjiu pagoda.” Over time, the pronunciation of “Banjiu Tower” was altered or misheard as “Banji Tower,” which is how it is known today.
