FUNES 3D Flight

Van Castle

Van Castle stands as the largest surviving fortress of the ancient Urartian Kingdom. Carved into a massive limestone bluff overlooking Lake Van, the citadel features monumental rock-cut tombs, open-air temples, and foundational cuneiform inscriptions. Its cyclopean basalt walls, engineered to fit the natural bedrock, supported nearly three millennia of continuous occupation. Successive empires, from the Achaemenid Persians to the Ottomans, layered their own architectural legacy over the Urartian core, preserving a remarkable physical record of Anatolian history.
