Ronglu Li Family Ancestral Temple

Following the curve of the Huangyong River in Dongguan, visitors encounter a remarkably preserved streetscape of Ming and Qing dynasty architecture. Here stands the Ronglu Li Family Ancestral Temple, a defining structure of the traditional Lingnan water town aesthetic. The temple was built to venerate a distinguished ancestor of the local Li clan who held the official title of "Ronglu." Spanning a historical period from the Ming Dynasty through the Republic of China, the building functions as a central gathering place for the practice of "Deben" culture, a family tradition rooted in filial piety, loyalty, and shared heritage.

The architecture commands attention through its precise craftsmanship. Artisans shaped the structure with detailed wood, stone, and brick carvings, supporting the roof with carved beams and painted rafters. The temple belongs to a larger, carefully planned environment. Flanked by the Li Family Great Ancestral Hall, traditional fengshui ponds, and ancient gatehouses like Juren Li and Shijia Fang, the temple anchors a historic neighborhood that traces its communal origins to the Northern Song Dynasty in 1091.

In recent years, Huangyong Village has committed significant resources to ensure the temple's survival. Recognized as a Guangdong Provincial Historical and Cultural Site since 2002, the Ronglu Li Family Ancestral Temple offers a direct link to the region's past. It remains a quiet, enduring space where the architectural mastery of southern China and the long memory of the Li clan are fully visible.
