Huangyong Wenge

Rising from the banks of the Dongjiang River, Huangyong Wenge stands as a physical monument to centuries of intellectual ambition. Built during the Qing Dynasty, this hexagonal pagoda was designed to capture the spiritual energy of the surrounding landscape. The people of Huangyong, historically celebrated as a village of civil and martial scholars, constructed literary pagodas on the eastern and western edges of their community. They believed these structures would anchor their prosperity and ensure continued academic success for future generations.

The pagoda’s robust brick and stone masonry has weathered centuries of river winds, preserving its original Qing Dynasty profile. On the exterior of the second level, a stone inscription board plainly identifies the building as the Wenge Pagoda. Inside, a wooden staircase winds through three internal levels, leading visitors upward to a vantage point that overlooks the classic Lingnan water town scenery. The structure rises four stories on the outside, creating a distinct silhouette against the sky.

Today, Huangyong Wenge forms a central piece of a remarkably preserved street of Ming and Qing Dynasty architecture. It shares the riverbank with the Li Clan Ancestral Hall and various historical mansions, grounding the modern village in its deep cultural heritage. As a protected provincial cultural relic, the pagoda invites visitors to observe how early communities shaped their built environment to reflect their highest aspirations for education and civic duty.
