Dongguan Children's Library
Dongguan, Guangdong, China
On Xinfen Road, adjacent to the shaded paths of People's Park, the Dongguan Children's Library occupies a building with a layered history. Originally the city's main library, the 9,000-square-meter structure was reimagined in 2011 as a dedicated space for youth. The redesign preserved the institution's founding philosophy of keeping people and books close together while introducing a "library within a library" concept to serve a diverse community of readers.
The ground floor functions as a modern threshold. Two automated self-service zones operate around the clock, utilizing RFID technology and smart access systems to manage a collection of 50,000 picture books and children's titles. This seamless integration of technology allows families to browse and borrow on their own schedules, establishing the library as a constant, accessible presence in their daily lives.
The second floor forms the core of the children's experience. The main borrowing center holds over 120,000 volumes, surrounded by specialized areas designed for different stages of childhood. In the Parent-child Paradise, thousands of picture books and educational toys encourage early literacy and shared family reading. Nearby, the Digital Reading Experience Pavilion features interactive multimedia displays and a mini-theater, blending traditional storytelling with modern visual formats.
The third floor expands the building's mission, creating an intergenerational cultural hub. The Cantonese Opera Library preserves regional heritage with a collection of over 4,000 historical documents and 5,000 multimedia items, offering listening stations and an impromptu singing area for local enthusiasts. Adjacent to this is the Library for the Elderly, a quiet space stocked with large-print books, calligraphy stations, and traditional literature. This arrangement encourages the young and the old to share the same civic space, fostering a quiet exchange of respect and curiosity.
Beyond its physical walls, the library actively shapes Dongguan's cultural life through extensive programming. The "Bumblebee" mobile library buses deliver thousands of volumes directly to local schools. Special events, such as the "Night at the Library," invite children to leave their favorite stuffed animals overnight among the stacks, sparking their imagination about the secret life of books after dark. The Dongguan Children's Library functions as a deeply rooted educational anchor, turning the simple act of reading into a shared civic experience.
