Weiyuan Fort

Beneath the massive suspension cables of the modern Humen Bridge, the granite walls of Weiyuan Fort curve along the shoreline of the Pearl River estuary. Built in 1835 by the Qing government, this crescent-shaped stronghold stretches 360 meters along the water's edge, anchoring a maritime defense line historically known as the "Golden Lock and Bronze Pass." The fort hugs the coastal cliffs, its foundation constructed from heavy granite blocks topped with tightly rammed earth.

Walking through the site reveals a highly organized military architecture. The fort housed forty concealed artillery positions, referred to as "dark artillery," situated within vaulted stone chambers. A two-meter-wide trench runs behind these emplacements, backed by a protective wall pierced with loopholes for close-quarters rifle fire. Four additional cannons sat in open-air positions, completing an arsenal designed to control the narrow waterway. The complex originally functioned as a self-sustaining military community, complete with an official hall, barracks, a pharmacy, and a dock.

Weiyuan Fort served as the command center for Admiral Guan Tianpei and Imperial Commissioner Lin Zexu during the First Opium War. In the early months of 1841, Chinese forces under the command of Li Tingyu fought fiercely from these stone corridors. British forces ultimately overwhelmed the defenders, capturing and destroying the installation. The Qing government rebuilt the fort in 1843, and it faced destruction again during the Second Opium War in 1856 before a final restoration in 1882.

Today, Weiyuan Fort remains one of the most complete ancient coastal defenses in China. Integrated into the Opium Wars Museum, the site offers visitors a direct, physical connection to the nineteenth-century conflicts that reshaped the country. Looking out through the gun ports over the Pearl River, you can trace the history of a nation defending its shores and observe the exact vantage points where soldiers once stood against an invading fleet.
