Twin Pagodas, Shuangta Monastery

The Twin Pagodas of Shuangta Monastery were originally built during the Liao Dynasty, though the exact date remains unknown. Based on their architectural style and decorative features, the West Pagoda is believed to date to the mid-Liao Dynasty, while the East Pagoda likely dates to the late Liao Dynasty or the Jin Dynasty. The history of Shuangta Monastery can be traced back to before the Liao period, with a reconstruction during the Qing Dynasty.

Significance

The West Pagoda is an octagonal, three-story hollow brick pagoda, approximately 13 meters high, composed of a base, pagoda body, eaves, and finial. The south side of the pagoda body features an arched door, while the other seven sides are adorned with small brick pagodas and niches for Buddha statues. The eaves are constructed with wooden-style brick corbels, and the finial consists of a lotus pedestal, an umbrella-shaped structure, and other components.
The East Pagoda is an octagonal single-eave brick pagoda, approximately 11 meters high, with a base similar to that of the West Pagoda. The south side has an arched door, while the north side has a false door. The four corners are decorated with crowned sitting Buddha sculptures. The eaves are finely crafted from bricks, and the finial is well-preserved.
