The Huanghuatan Pagoda was built during the Liao Dynasty to house Buddhist relics. Approximately 500 meters from the pagoda lies the site of Jianzhou City, constructed during the reign of Emperor Shengzong of Liao.
Throughout history, the Huanghuatan Pagoda has undergone multiple repairs. In 1938, during the 27th year of the Republic of China, a restoration was conducted. In 2006, repairs were made to the pagoda's base. Between 2009 and 2010, a comprehensive restoration was carried out in Chaoyang City, during which the underground palace and celestial palace were discovered.
The Huanghuatan Pagoda is a representative Buddhist pagoda from the late Liao Dynasty. Its structural dimensions, tapering proportions, construction techniques, and sculptural artistry adhere to Liao pagoda architectural standards while incorporating unique local culture and design styles. The donor inscriptions carved on the pagoda provide valuable material evidence for studying the relationship between Liao pagodas and their associated cities, as well as the development of Buddhism during the Liao Dynasty.
