Suyuan Building, Old Campus of Liaoning University
Shenyang, Liaoning, China
The Suyuan Building stands on the western edge of Liaoning University’s Chongshan Campus, a 1952 European-influenced structure built to outlast the elements. Its exceptionally thick masonry was originally engineered to repel Shenyang’s bitter winters for the Ministry of Heavy Industry’s materials school. By July 1958, the newly formed university claimed the space, shifting the focus from industrial materials to the building blocks of life.
The scent of turned soil drifts from the experimental fields directly to the south, meeting the sterile, climate-controlled air of the first-floor cellular genetics laboratory. The architecture holds decades of human ambition. Generations of hurrying students wore down the stone of the north entrance steps, prompting a meticulous restoration completed in September 2023. Inside, the demands of modern science require constant physical adaptation. During the 2025 renovations, electricians pulled over 130 meters of heavy cable through freshly installed steel bridges. This electrical upgrade feeds the Liaoning Provincial Engineering Research Center for Computation, Simulation, and Information Processing of Biological Macromolecules, ensuring high-precision equipment hums without interruption.
Today, the Suyuan Building remains a working artifact at 66 Chongshan Middle Road. It shelters the future of biological research within walls forged for a heavy industrial past.
