Kunming Tuodong Stadium

At an elevation of 1,896 meters, Kunming Tuodong Stadium stands on ground where the city's history is written in sweat, concrete, and memory. Located at No. 99 Dongfeng East Road, the site began its journey in 1938. In March 1942, before the concrete stands even existed, tens of thousands of mourners gathered here. They wept over the blood-stained uniform of General Dai Anlan, brought back from the battlefields of Burma.

The stadium officially opened its indoor facilities in 1958, evolving over decades of reconstruction. Between 1987 and 1990, builders added a four-tier spectator stand. This concrete bowl held both triumph and tragedy. On February 7, 1985, a sudden, cold downpour during a friendly match triggered a fatal stampede at an exit door. Yet, this same grass pitch became the "invincible highland" of Chinese football, hosting an undefeated national team streak from 1985 to 2016. On May 13, 2001, the stadium shook with the roar of forty thousand voices singing the national anthem as China defeated Indonesia 5-1. Two years later, on July 29, 2003, thirty thousand fans watched Real Madrid train. Photographer Lin Jian captured the moment a young fan from northeast China sprinted past security onto the grass, desperate for an autograph.

Time took its toll, and by 2019, structural decay silenced the arena. In April 2025, a 250 million RMB modernization project began. Completed in May 2026, the redesign honors the local landscape. Over ninety-five percent of the exterior is clad in white perforated metal panels, crowned by a signature red roof. Inside, the seats form a gradient of white, light purple, and deep purple, mimicking Kunming's blooming jacaranda trees. Today, the smooth, precast running track of the East Outer Field is open to the public, welcoming a new generation to run beneath the high-altitude sky.
