Xiangyun Food City
Kunming, Yunnan, China
At the southeast corner of Baoshan and Xiangyun streets in Kunming, a multi-story concrete structure holds a century of culinary memory. The Xiangyun food brand began in 1920, six years before the surrounding street was formed in 1926. Today, this indoor food hall serves as a climate-controlled sanctuary where the cool hiss of air-conditioning meets the rising steam of boiling broths.
Inside, the building operates on a vertical hierarchy of taste. The ground floor is a maze of open stalls where visitors buy roasted milk fans, pan-fried Erkuai, and bamboo-tube rice. On the upper levels, larger dining rooms serve wild mushroom hot pots and steam-pot chicken. The air carries the rich, salty aroma of cured Xuanwei ham and the sweet, tropical scent of Dai-style pineapple rice.
The building's physical boundaries reflect the shifting tides of urban policy. In 2019, the Huguo Subdistrict Office launched a night economy initiative. In response, the building's management company, led by general manager Deng Shenqiang, built twenty-two temporary food pavilions along the southern and eastern facades. These stalls occupied 132 square meters of pavement, connecting the food city directly to the historic Nanqiang Pedestrian Street.
This outward expansion was short-lived. In late 2023, municipal authorities declared the structures unauthorized. On December 18, 2023, workers erected blue metal barriers around the exterior stalls, silencing the sizzle of street-side woks.
Despite these external changes, the indoor core of Xiangyun Food City remains active. Through decades of urban remodeling, the food city continues to feed Kunming, its kitchens preserving the regional flavors of Yunnan.
