Each of the 1,519 steps is a vertebra in the spine of Yunyang’s rebirth. When the Three Gorges Dam’s waters swallowed their ancestral city, the people carved a new skyward identity: the Dengyun Stone Steps, the world’s largest urban staircase. Its 300-meter ascent stitches the relocated heart of Yunyang County into the Longjieling Mountains, blue-white Three Gorges stone quarried by craftsmen whose chisels echoed the reservoir’s rising tides.

Local legend claims the 1,519 steps encode an unspoken vow, though none agree on its meaning. Is it a countdown to the Millennium? A tally of relocated families? The mystery persists, as does the stone’s cool touch under palms, its grooves worn smooth by pilgrims and daily commuters. Eight scenic nodes punctuate the climb: Panshi City’s fortress walls, the Lungjiling Ecological Corridor’s terraced greens, the Citizens’ Cultural Activity Center where museum artifacts hum with submerged echoes.

At dusk, the staircase becomes a ribbon of light, tracing Yunyang’s pact with elevation. To climb is to touch both earth and ether, to walk a seam between what was swallowed and what refused to sink.
