This pagoda is a typical example of a Liao Dynasty brick pagoda imitating wooden architecture. Built in the 13th year of the Chongxi era (1044) during the Liao Dynasty, it was renovated in the 5th year of the Chongde era (1640) of the Qing Dynasty. Inside the pagoda are 1,548 “śarīra” (Buddhist relics). A stele next to the pagoda recounts the Qing Dynasty restoration process. However, due to the long passage of time, records of its initial construction had long been considered mere legend. It was not until an archaeological investigation in 1985—when a stone casket hidden in the underground chamber was discovered—that information about the pagoda’s original construction came to light. It revealed that over 1,500 people contributed funds to build the pagoda in hopes of good fortune, with their names and donation amounts recorded inside the stone casket.
