Hartsville Nuclear Plant
Tennessee, United States of America
The Hartsville Nuclear Plant was a planned nuclear power facility near Hartsville, Tennessee, initiated by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) in the 1970s. Conceived as the world's largest nuclear plant at the time, it was to comprise four General Electric boiling water reactors, divided into two plants: Plant A (units A1 and A2) and Plant B (units B1 and B2).
Construction commenced in April 1977, but by the early 1980s, escalating costs and a decline in projected electricity demand led to the project's cancellation. Units B1 and B2 were canceled in 1983, followed by units A1 and A2 in 1984.
Today, remnants of the unfinished plant, including a prominent cooling tower, remain on the site. The area has since been repurposed for industrial development, such as the PowerCom Industrial Center, and houses facilities like the Trousdale Turner Correctional Center.
