Sorg Mansion

Rising like a Romanesque sentinel on Middletown’s South Main Street, the Sorg Mansion is a paradox of endurance—a Gilded Age titan that survived abandonment, decay, and resurrection. Its story begins in 1887, when tobacco magnate Paul J. Sorg, Middletown’s first millionaire, commissioned architects Pretzinger and Musselman to sculpt his $1 million vision into 13,000 square feet of imported red limestone. The result: a 35-room castle bristling with turrets, gargoyles, and a stone griffin eternally mid-snarl. Twelve bedrooms glowed with fireplaces; parquet floors swirled beneath 12-foot ceilings; curved glass crowned a tower where Sorg likely surveyed his empire—a kingdom of paper mills, banks, and the opera house he gifted the city.

When Sorg died in 1902, his widow Jenny lingered in the mansion’s new north wing—a 1902 addition boasting a ballroom where gowns once whispered across oak. By the 1930s, the Great Depression carved this singular home into apartments, its stained glass muffled by plasterboard, its carriage house sagging. Decades of makeshift renovations buried Sorg’s legacy beneath drop ceilings and frayed wiring.

Enter Mark and Traci Barnett in 2013. The Baltimore couple purchased the crumbling estate for $225,000, undaunted by peeling slate roofs and gutters choked with a century’s debris. Their mission: resurrect Sorg’s masterpiece without erasing its scars. Restorers peeled back layers to reveal original orange-rose limestone hidden under grime. Artisans repaired plaster medallions, their hands retracing 19th-century swirls. In the library, sunlight reignited prisms in surviving stained glass—panels that once filtered light for Sorg’s congressional campaign strategizing.

The Barnetts’ $1.32 million labor of love climaxed in 2018 with a candlelight tour. Over 1,000 visitors wandered rooms where time folded: clawfoot tubs gleamed near gaslight sconces; the ballroom’s rebuilt maple floor echoed with jazz-age memories. Today, the mansion straddles eras—its original 1887 safe sits intact, guarding modern HVAC blueprints.

Yet the true marvel lies in its duality: a home reborn as a communal heirloom. Though the Barnetts plan to reside here, they envision sharing its grandeur as a B&B. Each restored detail—a gargoyle’s repaired wing, the turret’s curved glass—invites Middletown to reclaim pride in a industrialist’s ambition made stone.

The mansion persists, not as a relic, but a testament to stewardship. From Sorg’s cigar-scented library to 21st-century preservation grants, its walls hold a chorus of voices insisting: Beautiful things are worth saving.
