Yuxi No. 34 Wenxing Street
Yuxi, Yunnan, China
At coordinates 24°06′36″N 102°45′25″E, the No. 34 Wenxing Street Courtyard stands as a quiet anchor in the historic urban core of Tonghai County. The structure is a classic Chinese courtyard, designed to adapt to the local environment of the Xiushan subdistrict.
The physical fabric of the courtyard preserves the labor of its original builders. On the second floor of the main hall, the weathered wooden doors and windows show the precise joinery of Qing-era carpenters. Overhead, the molded clay roof tiles, or wadang, shield the interior from the seasonal rains of Yunnan. These architectural elements maintain a unified style that defines the historic streetscape of Wenxing Street.
Because Tonghai is recognized as a National Historical and Cultural City, preservationists maintain the property under a strict philosophy of restoring the old to look old. This approach ensures that the sun-bleached timbers, the cool stone of the courtyard floor, and the soft acoustics of the enclosed space remain unchanged. Visitors can feel the cool draft moving through the open entryway, hear the distant murmur of the street, and observe the chisel marks left on the wooden pillars. The building remains a living record of community life, preserved through centuries of careful stewardship.
