Yuxi No. 34 Wenxianli Street Courtyard
Yuxi, Yunnan, China
At the coordinates of 24°06′34″N and 102°45′21″E, in the Xiulu Community of Tonghai County's Xiushan Sub-district, stands the No. 34 Wenxianli Lane Courtyard. Built during the late Qing dynasty, this residential compound represents the traditional domestic architecture of Yunnan Province. The courtyard survived the devastating regional earthquakes of 1915 and 1970, which leveled surrounding neighborhoods. Its survival rests on the flexible timber frames and interlocking joinery crafted by late Qing carpenters.
Inside, the scent of aged pine and cedar lingers in the air. Visitors can feel the smooth, hand-planed surfaces of the load-bearing wooden pillars, which have settled over more than a century. The cool, grey stone slabs of the central courtyard floor absorb the midday heat, while the deep, overhanging eaves cast long, protective shadows across the wooden lattice windows. When the wind blows from nearby Mount Xiu, the mortise-and-tenon joints emit a faint, rhythmic creak, a sensory reminder of the building's organic flexibility.
Human hands have continuously shaped this space. Master craftsman Zi Yuming and his team from the Tonghai Ancient Architecture Engineering Company meticulously restored the timber structures of Wenxianli, preserving the traditional carpentry methods passed down through generations of local woodworkers. On December 25, 2009, the People's Government of Tonghai County designated the courtyard as an official County-level Protected Monument.
