Nestled in Suncheon, South Jeolla Province, Naganeupseong Folk Village is a living relic of Korea’s Joseon era. Built in 1397 as a sand fortress against pirates, it evolved into a stone-walled administrative hub by the 17th century. Remarkably preserved, its 1.4 km walls enclose a grid of 230 thatched-roof homes (chogajip), government buildings, and ritual spaces, exemplifying Joseon-era harmony between humans and nature.

Home to 100 households, the village thrives with tradition. Residents maintain ancestral practices—farming, crafting, and annual rituals like the South Jeolla Food Festival in October, where nongak music and pansori performances enliven the streets. Visitors can weave hemp, shape pottery, or stay in homestays (minbak) to absorb stories passed through generations.

Spring’s golden rapeseed fields, summer’s cicada songs, autumn’s fiery foliage, and winter’s snow-dusted roofs. A backdrop for period films like The Face Reader, Naganeupseong shares kinship with Japan’s Shirakawa-go yet stands unique. Climb its walls at dawn to witness smoke curling from hearths and hear blacksmiths’ hammers—a timeless ode to Korea’s agrarian spirit.
