In the high, cool air of Yunnan Province, where the earth breathes steam at the Dali Geothermal Paradise, stands the Eryuan Christian Gospel Church. Located in Bibihu Town along Ninghu Road—just south of Yuhu Park and near the quiet waters of the Bibihu Scenic Area—this sanctuary represents a century of cultural convergence.

The story began in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries when Protestantism first reached the mountains of Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture. In 1930, the China Inland Mission sent an American missionary named John Kuyper, known locally as Yang Zhiying, to organize work across western Yunnan. A year later, in 1931, another American named Wan Enpu arrived in Eryuan County to found the Fengyu Church. These early travelers walked the rugged trade routes, carrying translated scriptures and Western ideas into a landscape dominated by ancient local traditions.

The physical structure of the Gospel Church reflects this history. Its design merges traditional Christian liturgical spaces—built for congregational worship, prayer, and community gatherings—with regional architectural styles. Local builders used regional materials to construct the hall, shaping a space where Western religious forms adapted to the aesthetic preferences of the Bai ethnic majority. Today, the church operates under the Three-Self Patriotic Movement and the Christian Council, affiliated with the broader Dali Christian Church.

On Sundays, the voices of Bai believers fill the hall, singing hymns translated into their native tongue. This building is an active house of faith, a monument to the resilience of a community that reshaped a foreign religion into a local heritage.
