In the core of Xizhou Ancient Town, within Yunnan's Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture, the Dong Xingming Residence stands as a quiet monument to a bygone mercantile empire. This historic structure emerged from the wealth of the Xizhou merchant group, who accumulated fortunes along the Ancient Tea Horse Road during the Ming, Qing, and Republic of China eras.

Step through the entrance to experience the spatial logic of traditional Bai architecture. The layout follows the classic "Three Buildings and a Screen Wall" configuration, where a whitewashed masonry screen wall reflects afternoon sunlight back into the central courtyard. Overhead, the "Four Courtyards and Five Skylights" design carves the sky into small, luminous rectangles, drawing cool mountain air down into the living quarters. The scent of fermented indigo drifts from nearby tie-dyeing workshops, settling over the hand-planed timber posts and stone foundations.

The residence exists within a dense network of historic homes. Walk one hundred and ten meters southeast from the Dong Chengnong Residence, or two hundred and sixty meters southwest from the Yang Pinxiang Residence, to find its gates. The neighborhood preserves a deep chronology of local life. Nearby, the Guangxu-era Yin Shouqing Residence and the 1945 Yang Ruxuan Residence, locally called the Corner Building, frame the narrow stone alleys. The sacred ground of the Jiutanshen place of worship sits just steps away, anchoring the community's spiritual life.

Today, the residence connects the past to the modern traveler. Visitors can touch the chisel marks left by nineteenth-century stonemasons, hear the distant echo of horse bells in the wind, and watch the shadows lengthen across the courtyard plaster, experiencing the enduring rhythm of Xizhou.
