Wheeling Windmill
Wheeling, West Virginia, United States of America
Perched atop Wheeling Hill, where Stone Boulevard meets the historic National Road, a Dutch-style windmill spins tales of reinvention. Its story begins not in the 1600s Netherlands, but in 1929 America—a cheeky gasoline station dressed in Old World drag.
When the Sterling Oil Company commissioned this folly, they bet $10,000 (nearly $180,000 today) that motorists would brake for fairy tales. The windmill’s 35-foot sails, studded with electric bulbs, became nocturnal lures—a radiant carousel for the Model T crowd. Yet this was no solitary whimsy: 130 miles south, Parkersburg’s Quaker State windmill pumped gas since 1928, now enshrined on the National Register. Wheeling’s cousin chose a grittier path.
Decades reshaped its skeleton. The 1940s saw it slinging ale as a tavern; the 1970s, hawking glassware; the 1990s, crafting keys—each iteration leaving ghostly fingerprints on its timber bones. Through it all, the stationary blades watched U.S. Route 40 evolve, their silence defying the original promise of motion.
Then, in 2017, hope arrived with a pub owner’s hammer. Workers peeled back layers of Sheetrock, revealing 1929 heart pine. Electricians resurrected the crown lights. And crucially—they oiled the dormant gearbox. One November dawn, the sails creaked into rotation for the first time in living memory, their shadow sweeping Stone Boulevard like a clock reset.
Today, The Windmill Pub thrums with dartboards and laughter, its menu marrying pepperoni rolls (a WV staple) with truffle fries. Locals nurse IPAs beneath ceiling joists that once absorbed gasoline vapors. Outside, the blades turn—not for commerce, but continuity.
Meanwhile, real wind turbines dot Appalachian ridges nearby. As of 2024, Wheeling Power serves 111 solar homes and two wind-powered clients—a quiet revolution beneath the novelty landmark’s spinning wink.
The Wheeling Windmill endures not despite its contradictions, but because of them—a monument to the American genius for alchemizing absurdity into legacy. When its blades slice the twilight, they write circular poetry: What begins as spectacle may yet become soul.
