Lijiang Zhiyun Monastery

In 1727, a Naxi bamboo weaver named Luoseng returned from Tibet to the western foothills of the Lashi Basin. He had studied under the Gyalwa Karmapa, and he sought a place to build a sanctuary. Local legend says a master pointed his staff toward a colorful cloud hovering over the slopes of the mountain, marking the auspicious ground. Thus, Zhiyun Monastery—meaning "pointing at the cloud"—was born. Known in Tibetan as Karma Namgyal Ling, it became the head of Lijiang's five great monasteries and the administrative seat of thirteen Kagyu temples.

The structure faces east, looking out over the waters of Lashi Lake. It stands as a physical meeting point of Han, Tibetan, Bai, and Naxi architectural traditions. The Main Buddha Hall rises over thirteen meters, a three-story pavilion crowned by a central pyramidal roof. Inside, six twelve-meter-tall wooden pillars reach toward the ceiling. Outside, twelve roof corners are decorated with carved dragons and phoenixes, where wind bells catch the mountain breeze.

Inside the ground-floor assembly hall, a gilded bronze statue of a twelve-year-old Sakyamuni Buddha sits in quiet contemplation alongside the stupa of the fifteenth Dongbao Living Buddha. In the courtyard, five ancient trees—a rock mulberry, a Chinese scholar tree, a ginkgo, a plum, and a Yunnan cherry—have grown for nearly three centuries. In late autumn, the ginkgo drops a carpet of golden leaves. Behind the temple, on the southern slope, a sacred rock formation bearing natural fertility symbols is carved with Tibetan and Sanskrit mantras.

Though mid-19th-century rebellions destroyed much of the original thirteen-courtyard complex, the reconstruction of 1879 preserved its spirit. Today, the monastery serves as the quiet headquarters of the local Buddhist association. Novices once learned to write Tibetan script here by pressing white clay powder onto grease-coated blackboards. Visitors today can still hear the wind bells, touch the ancient bark, and feel the quiet endurance of a sanctuary built beneath a pointed cloud.
