Lijiang Xueding Monastery

In 1873, a local Feng Shui master selected the center of Qingyun Village, where the waters of the Black Dragon and White Dragon pools meet, to build Xueding Monastery. The builders oriented the main hall to face north, looking directly toward the cold, snow-capped peaks of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. They planted a sweet osmanthus and a red plum tree in the courtyard, which still bloom there today.

The temple was built to house Xueding Laoye, a local rain deity. The original deity is a 23.2-centimeter-tall bronze statue depicting a single-legged figure performing a Tibetan Guozhuang dance with a boot resting on his head. During dry seasons, villagers carried this heavy bronze figure through the streets, splashing water to summon rain. In 1885, when the Du Wenxiu rebellion threatened the valley, villagers submerged the bronze deity in the local river to hide it from looters. Later, the statue was stolen, ending up in an antique shop in Heqing before villagers pooled their funds to buy it back.

The architecture spans five hundred square meters in a traditional layout of three rooms and a screen wall. Visitors can feel the deep grooves of the wood carvings on the doors and partition screens of the main hall. The eastern bay once served as a Guanyin hall, while the western bay housed the rain deity. To the east of the screen wall, an auxiliary courtyard contains a traditional theatrical stage.

Human hands left their marks across the temple. Lijiang Prefect Zhu Hong carved the words "Protect My People" on a wooden plaque, while the Naxi poet Li Yuzhan and the educator Zhou Guannan brushed the poetic couplets on the columns. The artist Sun Taichu calligraphed the entrance sign.

Today, the monastery serves as a cultural and elderly activity center for Qingyun Village. The quiet halls, once filled with urgent prayers for rain, now echo with the clatter of tiles and cards as local elders gather to play games beneath the ancient plum branches.
