Lijiang Martial Temple

The Lijiang Martial Temple, historically known as the Guandi Temple, stands in the cool shadow of Wanjuan Mountain as a monument to imperial transition. It represents gailuguiliu, the historical replacement of local chieftains with imperial Han officials.

In 1706, assistant prefect Fan Jing and director of studies Yang Binjun raised the first timber pillars outside Lijiang's south gate. Seven years later, the local Naxi chieftain, Tusi Mu Xing, repaired the structure, blending imperial authority with local allegiance. In 1742, Prefect Guan Xuexuan expanded the main gate and built a grand dual-story pavilion. By 1812, a tribute student named Niu Yulin organized another restoration.

In 1835, the entire temple was moved to its current site outside the north gate. The scent of fresh pine soon turned to the smell of charred cedar when Xianfeng-era military fires consumed the complex. In October 1871, Prefect Qu Shaopei rebuilt the temple from the ashes. Builders raised a traditional quadrangle courtyard of wood and soil, crowning the Main Hall with a single-eave hip-and-gable roof. They carved interlocking dougong bracket sets to support the heavy eaves, leaving distinct chisel marks on the timber.

The twentieth century brought secular noise. Soldiers marched through the courtyard during the Republican era, and the county court occupied the halls until 1949. By the 1950s, the county grain department filled the sacred spaces with the dry dust of stored wheat and corn. Decades of neglect left the timber rotting under heavy tiles. On December 6, 2019, conservators began a meticulous rescue. Using the traditional un-roofing and complete dismantling method, carpenters spent entire days cleaning and repairing single beams, adhering to the principle of minimal intervention.

Today, the restored Main Hall, East and West Wing Rooms, Flower Hall, and pass-through hall stand quiet. The wood-and-soil structures reflect the late Qing architecture of Yunnan. The temple remains a physical record of Lijiang's cultural integration, preserved by hands that still respect the ancient joinery.
