Girls Castle

Perched on a jagged islet off Rize’s storm-lashed coast, the Maiden’s Castle emerges from the Black Sea mist like a half-sunken crown. Built by Byzantine engineers in the 6th century, its volcanic basalt walls still bear chisel marks angled—the precise tilt needed to deflect both enemy projectiles and centuries of salt-laden winds. Three concentric defensive rings once rose here, their geometries so precise that during the summer solstice, shadows from the central tower’s arrow slits align with hidden markers in the outer walls, creating a sundial network that timed naval patrols.

Genoese merchants added their chapter to this stone chronicle in the 1300s. Beneath the northeast battlement, archaeologists recently uncovered a rusted chain hoist mechanism, its gears still flecked with 14th-century beeswax used to muffle noise during night watch. More poignant still are the dual inscriptions found etched into a cellar beam: a Greek sailor’s prayer to Saint Nicholas alongside a Genoese timber merchant’s crude sketch of a masted ship, separated by three centuries yet sharing the same oak grain.

The castle’s legends outpace its history. While the romantic tale of an imprisoned noblewoman is pure fiction, 2021 sonar scans revealed a more haunting truth: 800 meters southwest lies a Byzantine merchant vessel, its hull cradling a marble sarcophagus inscribed “Thekla,” named for the 2nd-century ascetic who famously escaped confinement. Did storm-tossed sailors see this fortress as a divine echo of their saint’s deliverance? The stones keep their secret.

Modern visitors arrive by fishing boats that dip and rise through waves that once battered Byzantine dromons. Those who brave the slippery jetty find walls alive with fossilized ammonites—prehistoric spirals frozen in stone—interrupted by sudden flashes of Venetian glass from 15th-century repairs. At low tide, the receding waters expose ancient shipways carved into the bedrock, their grooves still deep enough to cradle phantom galleys.

As dusk falls, a peculiar phenomenon occurs: air rushing through collapsed eastern chambers vibrates the remaining tower into a deep, cello-like hum. Local fishermen swear this is the voice of a girl singing Byzantine hymns, but scientists attribute it to wind interacting with the fortress’s unique resonance cavities. Either way, when moonlight silver-plates the waves and this ancient stone instrument plays its accidental symphony, history feels less like a study and more like a séance.

Here, every cracked merlon holds layered stories—of Byzantine soldiers roasting mackerel over driftwood fires, Genoese merchants tallying amber cargo by lamplight, Ottoman sailors chiseling crescent moons into weathered stones. The Maiden’s Castle endures not as a ruin, but as a coastal palimpsest, its surface erased and rewritten by generations of wind, water, and human longing. To touch its walls is to finger the edges of time itself, where geology and ambition collide in the spray of the eternal Black Sea.
