Former Site of Workers’ Culture Hall of Xi’an
Xi'An, Shaanxi, China
The Workers Culture Hall—once the 1953 Shaanxi Grand Auditorium—embodies a defiant fusion.
Designed by French-trained architect Hong Qing, its hip-and-gable roof floats atop reinforced concrete, a mid-century ode to resilience. Designated a 20th-century architectural gem in 2023, its 2024 revival saw artisans relaying 100,000 tiles (13,000 originals) using Qing-era “one hemp-five ash” mortar. Beneath restored terrazzo floors and mineral-pigmented frescoes, the hall now thrums with Qinqiang opera crescendos and calligraphy exhibitions, its arched windows framing a city reconnecting with layered pasts.
