Yunnan Railway Museum

At No. 913 Beijing Road in Kunming, the Yunnan Railway Museum stands as a physical manifestation of a century of transit. SIt merges directly with the active Kunming North Railway Station. Visitors walking through the steel-framed skybridge, which spans three active tracks, can feel the rumble of trains passing directly beneath their feet.

This structure unites two distinct eras. The South Hall replicates the yellow, French-style architecture of the historic Yunnanfu Station, the original terminus of the Yunnan-Vietnam Railway. Across the tracks, the North Hall reflects the clean lines of a modern high-speed rail terminal. The two halls are linked by a steel-framed skybridge. Inside, the ground floor holds multiple tracks displaying the region's unique "three-gauge coexistence" system, where 1,000 mm metre-gauge, 600 mm narrow-gauge, and 1,435 mm standard-gauge lines are displayed side by side.

The physical relics in the museum offer a tactile connection to the past. Visitors can touch the cold surface of an 1880 British-made steel rail and a 1902 Hanyang-manufactured rail. Nearby sits the tiny, black SN-type No. 29 steam locomotive, built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1923, which ran on 600 mm tracks until 1990. It stands alongside the sleek Michelin petrol-powered railcar, built in France in 1914 and retrofitted with rubber wheels in 1932, and the "Chuncheng" electric multiple unit—the first of its kind to enter service in China.

The museum originated in 1990 in Kaiyuan as the Yunnan Narrow-Gauge Railway History Exhibition Hall. It was upgraded to a museum and relocated here in 2003, opening to the public on December 28, 2004. In August 2012, the original building was demolished due to metro construction, and reconstruction began the following month. The current facility opened on May 18, 2014. Owned by China Railway Kunming Group, it has offered free admission since October 12, 2022. It remains a working station where the past runs parallel to the active journeys of the present.
