Yunnan Observatory Historic Building Complex

In 1938, as war swept across China, astronomers fled Nanjing with precious glass lenses to build an observatory on a remote mountain in Kunming, operating a telescope powered entirely by gravity. Director Yu Qingsong led this westward retreat to Fenghuang Mountain. Under his guidance, scientists like Zhang Yuzhe worked in the dark, shivering through cold nights without electricity or running water, tracking solar sunspots and planetary alignments.
They built Block A in 1939, a T-shaped structure of blue brick and timber. Local hands pressed the characters for the Institute of Astronomy into the wet clay of the roof's eave tiles. Inside, Yu Qingsong installed a Ross variable star camera. Lacking electricity, he engineered a gravity-driven tracking system that ticked steadily in the dark, keeping the lens aligned with the stars. Nearby, a solar spectrograph darkroom used precise wall apertures to capture the sun's rays, while Block B housed the weary staff. In 1957, the site expanded with Block C, a red-brick solar observatory featuring a metallic dome that screeched open to track the sun.
Today, this triangular historic core stands alongside modern giants. The 1-meter Zeiss optical telescope and the massive 45-meter-tall, 40-meter-wide radio telescope dish now rise from the same ridge. This giant dish acts as a deep-space eye, tracking the Chang'e lunar probes and receiving data from the moon.
The historic buildings, recognized in 2024 as 20th-century architectural heritage, preserve the quiet determination of their creators. The rough blue bricks and the silent gravity gears remain, reminding us that our reach for the stars began with simple clay, heavy iron weights, and an unyielding gaze upward.
