Yunnan Heijing Dalong Shrine

To reach the Dalong Shrine, you must climb more than one hundred stone steps up the Seven Star Stage, a steep hillside at the foot of Wanchun Mountain. Below, the Longchuan River flows past the ancient salt town of Heijing. The shrine stands as a monument to a single discovery. In local history, a Yi woman named Li Aozhao followed a black ox to this valley, where she found a hidden salt-brine spring. This discovery transformed the region into an imperial economic powerhouse. The townspeople deified Li Aozhao as the Salt Water Female Dragon King, building this sanctuary to honor her.

The physical structure of the shrine carries the scars of China's dynastic transitions. Workers first raised the temple in 1659, during the final years of the Ming dynasty. Two years later, in 1661, invading Qing forces destroyed it. The community rebuilt the shrine in 1662, naming it the Zhaojing Shrine. The builders used local red sandstone, carving lifelike lions to guard the entrance. These stone guardians still feel rough and sun-warmed to the touch. Inside the main hall, which is five bays wide with a pseudo-hip roof, the wooden brackets preserve the bold, structural geometry of Ming-dynasty carpentry.

In the eighteenth century, the salt wells of Heijing caught the attention of the imperial court. Emperor Yongzheng personally brushed four characters—'Ling Yuan Pu Ze,' meaning the spiritual source of universal beneficence—onto a wooden plaque. This massive artifact, measuring over two meters long and eighty centimeters wide, features nine deeply carved imperial dragons. In 1844, wealthy salt merchants and salt-pan operators funded a major reconstruction, adding a grand theatrical stage where actors performed operas to the sound of clashing cymbals.

Today, the shrine remains a repository of memory. The smell of woodsmoke and boiling brine has faded, replaced by quiet exhibition rooms. Visitors can touch the red sandstone walls, look up at the imperial plaque, and examine the ancient iron pans and shipping documents that once fueled an empire's wealth.
