Yunnan Heijing Confucian Temple

In 1617, the salt-mining town of Heijing established a school for its local salt-curing office. Sixty-four salt-making households, relocated from Yingtian Prefecture, had long been barred from the imperial examinations due to registry restrictions. When these policies eased in the late Ming Dynasty, the community built this temple to educate their children.

The temple stands on a steep mountain slope, facing south along a symmetrical axis. Visitors enter through the Lingxing Gate, a Yuan-style stone archway standing 5.7 meters high and 9 meters wide. Its Sumeru base rests on stone drums and guarding lions, leading to a semi-circular Panpool. Beyond lies the Dacheng Hall, a wooden structure measuring 15.4 meters wide and 12 meters high, crowned with a single-eave gable-and-hip roof. Six layers of "elephant-nose and phoenix-head" bracket sets support the front eaves. Inside, the stone walls feature six relief carvings, including a detailed "Nine Lions Playing with a Pearl" design.

Nature repeatedly challenged this sanctuary. The nearby Longgou River unleashed devastating mudslides. A slide in March 1779 completely destroyed the temple, prompting immediate reconstruction. Another slide in May 1901 crushed the buildings again. Builders quickly reconstructed the halls, preserving the 1755 beam frames and bracket styles. To end this cycle of destruction, workers built the Qing'an Dyke. They bound red sandstone blocks with iron rivets and a thick mortar of lime, clay, sticky rice, and soy milk. This barrier successfully tamed the river.

Today, the temple spans over 2,000 square meters. Four historical stone steles remain on site, recording centuries of resilience. In 1978, the local primary school moved into the complex. The sound of children reading lessons now fills the courtyard, continuing a four-hundred-year legacy of learning.
