Yunnan Heijing Ancient Salt Workshop

In the deep gorge of the Longchuan River, the red sandstone of the Heijing Ancient Salt Workshop holds the memory of a resource that built empires. This valley in Yunnan's Lufeng City became the economic engine of the region. The story began nearly four thousand years ago when a Yi woman named Li Azhao followed a black cow to a salt-rich seep. By the Tang dynasty, organized extraction was underway. In 1340, the Yuan dynasty established a formal Salt Administration here, recognizing the immense value of the brine.

The physical remains of the workshop reveal a complex industrial landscape built from local timber and stone. Human hands carved shafts reaching eighty meters into the earth. To lift the heavy brine, workers operated massive wooden water wheels and rope pumps. The mineral-rich water flowed through elevated wooden aqueducts, spilling over high drying frames lined with fish-scale wooden shingles and straw. This process filtered out toxic sodium sulfate and evaporated excess water. In the boiling houses, stove-tenders heated the concentrated brine in heavy cast-iron pots over wood fires, casting a thick smell of woodsmoke across the valley. The liquid solidified into heavy, bowl-shaped blocks known as Tongzi salt.

The human cost and craft of this industry are etched into the architecture. In 1393, the Ming government relocated sixty-four elite families from Nanjing, forcing former officials to work as stove-tenders. These exiled families developed new extraction methods, helping Heijing eventually supply seventy percent of Yunnan's imperial tribute salt. By the late Qing dynasty, the local salt tax funded nearly forty-seven percent of the province's revenue. This intense production came at a price. By the 1930s, the surrounding forests were stripped bare for fuel, forcing commercial operations to move to Yipinglang.

Today, the quiet ruins are stabilized by drought-tolerant succulent plants that anchor the crumbling red sandstone. Visitors can touch the smooth timber channels, lift the heavy replica salt blocks, and walk the paths where merchants once traded. The workshop stands as a monument to the generations of laborers who transformed bitter underground water into the wealth of a province.
