Yunnan Dayao Walnut Museum

Deep in the soil of Yunnan's Chuxiong Prefecture, fossilized walnut shells reveal an agricultural lineage stretching back three thousand years. This ancient relationship with the land defines Dayao County, where the local community has long gathered, harvested, and survived.

For generations, Yi ethnic farmers cleared the steep hillsides of Jinbi Town. Their daily struggles left physical marks: hands calloused by the rough wooden handles of traditional plows, and fingers pricked by needles as women stitched heavy cloth to create traditional Yi embroidery. Later generations preserved this heritage, donating family heirlooms like Qing Dynasty wooden furniture to keep their ancestors' stories alive.

Today, the Dayao County Walnut Museum preserves these memories. Established within a fifteen-mu complex, the main building features a twelve-hundred-square-meter structure with nine hundred square meters of exhibition space. The museum uses a dual-floor layout to organize its collection of over four hundred relics, which span from the Neolithic Age to the modern era. The first floor displays ancient fossils, regional variety specimens, and traditional processing tools. The second floor houses twelve precious national cultural treasures, agricultural implements, and indigenous textiles.

A major upgrade in 2023 introduced modern digital systems to the galleries. Visitors stand before a two-hundred-and-forty-degree ring-screen theater and use virtual reality systems to experience the annual harvest. Outside the museum walls, the local Walnut Trading Market hums with activity, where merchants still trade Dayao's Geographic Indication protected walnuts.

The museum operates under a free-admission policy, welcoming thousands of visitors each year. Inside, the cool bronze tools of the Neolithic era and the glowing digital screens share the same space. Cracking a walnut shell remains a simple, physical act that connects modern hands directly to the ancient forest floor.
