Xiangyun Wudi Temple

On West Gulou Street in Xiangcheng Town, Yunnan Province, a single wooden hall stands inside the campus of the Junior High School Division of Xiangyun No. 1 Middle School. This is the surviving heart of the Xiangyun Wudi Temple, built in 1406 during the Yongle reign of the Ming Dynasty.

For over six centuries, this structure absorbed the shifting tides of local history. It underwent reconstruction in 1753 and a major renovation in 1823. During the Du Wenxiu Rebellion of 1857, rebel forces captured the city and destroyed the surrounding complex. They spared the main hall, converting its wooden interior into a mosque for worship. In 1887, a major restoration began, adding a Lingxing Gate, an Yinma Pool, a Bell Tower, a Drum Tower, a Chijing Place, and a screen wall to the grounds.

The twentieth century brought a different kind of transformation. In 1934, the Xiangyun County Junior High School was established on the temple grounds, filling the courtyard with the voices of students. Later, during the expansion of the school under the People's Republic of China, the wing rooms, towers, and screen wall were demolished. The temple also served as a quiet sanctuary for political organizers, functioning as an activity center for local Communist Party organizations and the headquarters for the eighth branch of the Yunnan-Guangxi border column.

Today, the remaining hall measures 28.15 meters wide and 14.6 meters deep. Visitors can touch the cool, weathered surface of its post-and-beam wooden frame. Above, the hip-and-gable roof is clad in pale blue tiles that catch the mountain light. The front eave gallery features integrated wooden canopy structures, offering shelter from the Yunnan rain. The building stands as a physical record of survival, where the scent of ancient timber mingles with the daily energy of a modern school.
