Xiangyun Mosque

Under the long shadows of the nearby Xiangcheng Bell and Drum Tower, the Xiangyun Mosque stands at No. 72 Beihou Street in the historic center of Xiangcheng Town, within Yunnan's Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture. The building that now serves as the mosque was originally constructed in 1406 as the Wudi Temple, a local shrine. In 1857, during the Du Wenxiu Rebellion, the temple was largely destroyed, and the surviving main hall was converted into a mosque by the local Hui Muslim community. Its structure combines traditional Chinese courtyard design with local architectural elements.

Over the subsequent century, local hands periodically restored the primary prayer hall, rebuilt the entry gateways, and swept the courtyard. According to historical records, the mosque underwent a major renovation between 1887 and 1888, which added a series of traditional structures. Today, the Xiangyun County Mosque Democratic Management Committee oversees the daily upkeep of the compound.

Inside, the cool stone of the courtyard and the splash of water from the ablution rooms ground the visitor in the sensory reality of daily worship. During Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, the primary prayer hall fills with the low murmur of voices, continuing a centuries-old tradition of faith. Visitors can touch the smooth, worn wood of the entrance columns, feeling a physical connection to the generations of Hui Muslims who built, defended, and rebuilt this sanctuary. The site was listed as a county-level cultural relic in 2001 and elevated to a prefecture-level protected site in 2016.
