Xiangyun Cangsheng Pavilion

At the intersection of Jiufeng Road and Wenhua Street in Xiangcheng Town, the Cangsheng Pavilion stands as a quiet survivor. Built during the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty (around the early 18th century) on the left side of the county Education Instructor's Office, this three-storey, square timber-frame structure originally belonged to the grand Xiangyun Confucius Temple. It remains alongside the Zunjing Pavilion as the final physical remnant of that spiritual complex.

The pavilion has witnessed centuries of profound transformation. In 1810, a major reconstruction ensured the survival of its main roof frame. When the Du Wenxiu Uprising of 1857 reduced the surrounding temple to ashes, the pavilion stood firm. Decades later, in 1930, the building became the Xiangyun Public Library. Visitors climbed the wooden stairs, past the levels that once held statues of Wenchang Dijun and the four-eyed character creator Cangjie, to read in the quiet rooms.

In April 1936, the 18th Regiment of the 6th Division of the Second Red Army Corps captured the county seat during the Long March and used the pavilion as a training ground for new recruits. Soldiers slept on the wooden floors and trained on the surrounding grounds. Their presence added a revolutionary chapter to a site built for scholars.

Today, the pavilion remains a cherished local landmark. First listed as a county-level cultural relic in 2001, it was later elevated to a prefecture-level protected site in 2013.Visitors can admire its ancient wooden structure and reflect on the many people—scholars, librarians, and soldiers.
