West Pagoda of Miaozhan Monastery

On cool autumn and winter nights, the moon transforms the West Pagoda of Miaozhan Monastery into a giant calligraphy brush, casting a long shadow that sweeps across the stone plaza of Guandu Ancient Town in Kunming.

This poetic phenomenon, known as "Writing the Sky with a Brush," vanished for over a century. Yuan Dynasty builders first raised the West Pagoda in the fourteenth century. In 1833, a violent earthquake shattered the earth, reducing the original structure to a heap of pale yellow dust. Its twin, the East Pagoda, survived the disaster. For more than 150 years, generations of locals walked past a vacant foundation, remembering the lost half of their skyline.

In 2001, modern masons returned to the site to restore the balance. Adhering to the preservation philosophy of "repairing the old to look old," they raised a 17.5-meter, 13-tier solid brick monument on the original square pedestal. They stacked six layers of rough, overlapping flat bricks to form each multi-eaved tier, tapering the structure toward the sky. From the second to the twelfth tiers, they carved recessed niches to house silent, stone Buddhist statues. At the summit, they placed a metallic spire and four glinting bronze-cast Garuda birds, mythical guardians meant to ward off floods.

Today, the reconstructed West Pagoda stands fifteen meters from its ancient sibling, framing the entrance to the monastery. Under the moonlight, the twin shadows have returned, writing their silent, sweeping poetry across the ground once more.
