The West Gate of Kunming Green Lake Park stands as a threshold where civic life meets military memory. Located along Cuihu West Road in the Wuhua District, this traditional Chinese stone archway faces the historic Yunnan Military Academy. In 1919, Yunnan military leader Tang Jiyao, then Commander-in-Chief of the Yunnan-Sichuan-Guizhou United Army, funded the construction of the Tang Causeway, an east-west embankment that anchored this western entrance. For over a century, the gate has watched cadets march from their yellow-walled academy and residents gather to escape the city.

Passing beneath the tiled roof of the archway, visitors step onto the Dingxi Bridge. This single-arch stone span, built of pale limestone, arches over the western lake segment. Beneath its stone belly, seasonal lotus ponds bloom in summer, and weeping willows brush the water. The sweet scent of osmanthus trees fills the air, guiding walkers toward the Tang Causeway and the central Haixin Pavilion.

The gate area reflects decades of deliberate urban care. A 2012 landscape improvement project enhanced the gate area as part of a broader effort to revitalize the park. In 2013, a traditional-style pavilion was added near the gate to host cultural performances. By late 2024, a new three-dimensional flower bed near the gate integrated sculptural elements with seasonal flora, enhanced by soft nighttime illumination. Today, a 1,403-meter "China Red" jogging track rings the park, passing near the West Gate entrance.

Every winter, the atmosphere changes. Thousands of black-headed gulls arrive from Siberia, their white wings and sharp cries filling the plaza. Visitors stand on the limestone bridge to toss bread into the air, continuing a seasonal ritual of coexistence.
