Weishan Xiao Gong Temple

In the northeast corner of Weishan Ancient City, the sweeping eaves of the Xiao Gong Temple cut a sharp silhouette against the Yunnan sky. Built during the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty, this structure served as the Jiangxi Guild Hall, a sanctuary for displaced merchants trading far from their eastern homes. These travelers sought the protection of Xiao Gong, a powerful water deity. They built a space that mirrored their longing, combining central Chinese architecture with local Yunnan styles.

War reduced the original halls to ash in 1869, during the Tongzhi reign. In 1898, a merchant named Li Songshan rallied his peers, collecting donations to raise the temple from its ruins. The rebuilt complex featured a layout of courtyards, gardens, and a projecting wooden stage. For decades, the local Wanyou Ban amateur troupe performed here, their voices echoing off the heavy timber columns.

Time reshaped the temple's purpose. Following the founding of the People's Republic of China, the halls became classrooms for Wenhua Middle School. Generations of children ran through the courtyards, their laughter replacing the old theatrical songs. In 2011, the school relocated to protect the fragile structures. Between 2016 and 2019, a major government restoration repaired the structural timbers and installed modern fire prevention systems. In 2013, the state recognized its value, designating it a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level as part of the Nanzhao Town Ancient Architectural Group.

Today, managed by the OCT Group since 2021, the temple operates as a quiet cultural sanctuary. Visitors enter a courtyard filled with the scent of white magnolias and the bright red of torch flowers. The front hall offers the smooth stone inkstones and soft brushes of the Four Treasures of the Study. In the main hall, where merchants once prayed for safe passage over wild rivers, guests now sit in a boutique tea room. They hold warm cups of local tea, listen to the rustle of turning pages in the public book bar, and touch the cool, carved lattice windows.
