Weishan South Community School

In the quiet of Sunjia Lane, within the southern quarters of Weishan Ancient City, stands a structure born of political collapse and personal sacrifice. Before it became the South Community School, this three-entry, south-facing compound was the private home of two Ming Dynasty officials, Xuan Yingshi and his brother Xuan Yingbin. When the Ming Dynasty fell, the brothers abandoned their bureaucratic lives, shaved their heads to become Buddhist monks at Wuyin Mountain, and sold their residence at a steep discount to establish a school for local commoners.

The architecture preserves this transition from private luxury to public education. Walk past the courtyards to the rear pavilion, a mid-to-late Ming survivor measuring exactly 10.6 meters in both width and depth. Here, the physical choices of ancient carpenters remain visible. To balance the visual weight of the central and side bays, the builders employed a column-shifting technique, moving the front eave columns to create a harmonious facade. They carved the square wooden pillars into the delicate shapes of plum blossoms, leaving a tactile record of their craftsmanship. Above, the double-eave hip-and-gable roof rests on bracket systems: five-color brackets support the upper eave, and three-color brackets support the lower.

Time and conflict have left their marks. In 1669, a local official named Zhang Shanhua donated his own funds to rebuild the site as the Yude Community School. Later, another official, Chen Wancheng, established a free school here. Wars during the Xianfeng and Tongzhi eras damaged the compound. The community rebuilt the halls during the Guangxu reign. In the twentieth century, the halls transitioned again, serving as a modern school and the Menghua County Council.

Today, the western garden offers a quiet space of green. The main pavilion stands stripped of its original roof ridge ornaments and lower-level doors. What remains is a physical archive of Weishan's intellectual endurance, where the decisions of seventeenth-century monks and Qing Dynasty donors are preserved in timber and stone.
