Weishan Diguan Archway

At the junction of Zhubi Lane, where Yuehua Street meets Risheng Street, the Weishan Diguan Archway stands as a monument of stone and memory. Positioned immediately north of the landmark Gongchen Tower, this blue stone structure marks a transition point on the main axis of the Nanzhao Ancient Street.

The story of the archway began in 1553, during the thirty-second year of the Jiajing reign of the Ming Dynasty. Local builders raised a stone monument to honor Zhang Liewen, a scholar from the Menghua region who achieved the prestigious jinshi rank in the imperial examinations that same year. Zhang went on to serve as the magistrate of Jiaxing County in Zhejiang, where his clean administration inspired locals to build a shrine in his honor. Later, he served as the Vice Commissioner of the Shanxi Provincial Surveillance Commission and Intendant of the Jingxing Military Circuit. His scholarly achievements eventually earned him a place in Weishan's Confucian temple.

The original sixteenth-century archway featured a four-pillar, three-bay layout. Heavy, rounded backing drums stabilized the bases of the pillars, while wooden-style dougong bracket sets supported the upper structure. In 1951, this original monument was destroyed. Fifty-two years later, in 2003, local craftsmen rebuilt the archway on its original site.

Today, the reconstructed three-span stone archway is made entirely of blue stone. Visitors can touch the cool, chiseled surfaces of the pillars and observe the shadows cast by the single-eave roof. The modern structure preserves the traditional dougong brackets, echoing the work of the original Ming Dynasty masons. Standing under the archway, one can hear the quiet hum of daily life from the surrounding residential and commercial sectors, connecting the modern town to its deep literary history.
