Weishan Beitan Monastery

Just outside the former northern gate of Weishan, near the waters of Xiaohe Bridge, Beitan Monastery stands on Civilization Street. This site once hosted the Ying'en Archway and the Official Reception Hall, where Ming and Qing dynasty officials conducted formal administrative handovers. In 1642, during the fifteenth year of the Chongzhen reign, builders transformed the grounds into a grand, systematic architectural complex. Over the centuries, these structures crumbled into ruin. In 2003, local villagers pooled their own savings to rebuild the sanctuary, brick by brick, preserving their shared heritage.

The central Laojun Hall stands flanked by the reconstructed Wenchang and Caishen Halls. An inner courtyard connects these sacred spaces, leading to a large side assembly hall. Inside the main hall, the walls display painted scenes from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Visitors can trace the brushstrokes depicting the Oath of the Peach Garden, the Three Visits to the Cottage, the Empty Fort Strategy, and the whipping of the corrupt inspector.

The monastery remains a sanctuary of living culture. During the Zhongyuan Festival in the seventh lunar month, the courtyard fills with the smell of burning paper and the heat of ceremonial fires. Taoist priests of the Longmen Zhengyi lineage perform the traditional Jiang Mulian ritual dramas. The air resonates with the classical, haunting melodies of Dongjing music. Priests commit printed paper talismans, known locally as Mazi or Zhima, to the flames, sending prayers upward in plumes of grey ash. Beitan Monastery is a monument built by the hands of its own community, where ancient history and daily devotion meet.
