Early morning on September 18th, overcast. The climate routine in the northwest is quite consistent—apart from the occasional rainy days, mornings and evenings are usually cloudy when sunlight is scarce. By midday, as the sun grows intense, the dark clouds gradually disperse, giving way to direct sunlight and sweltering heat. But today was a rainy day.
The Great Mosque is not particularly large. It stands alone on a vast, flat expanse, raised on a high platform with wild grass growing thickly around it. In terms of architectural style, it hardly differs from traditional Chinese religious buildings, with perhaps the only distinction being its orientation—it faces westward toward Mecca, whereas most Chinese religious architecture traditionally faces south.
