Sichuan Glass Company
Zigong, Sichuan, China
To understand the Sichuan Glass Company is to trace the trajectory of Chinese industrial ambition through the medium of sand and fire. Located at 82 Chuanbo Road in Zigong, a city rich in natural gas reserves, the facility emerged in 1971 from a strategic imperative to make the province self-sufficient. Before its furnaces were lit, Sichuan had no capacity to produce flat glass. This factory ended that deficit. It functioned as a proving ground for technological adoption, moving rapidly from basic manufacturing to advanced production methods imported from Belgium and the United States.
In the 1980s and 90s, the site became a hub of national innovation. Engineers here constructed China’s first vacuum sputtering magnetron coating line in 1987, and by 1995, they had successfully fired the country's first float glass line fueled by local natural gas. The output was branded "Bingling" (Ice Rhombus), a name that implied clarity and precision. The corporate structure shifted alongside the machinery, evolving from a state-run factory to a high-profile joint venture with Singaporean investors.
Yet, the physical permanence of the glass stood in contrast to the volatility of the market. Despite its pioneering technical achievements, the company succumbed to the pressures of overcapacity and economic shifts. The kilns went cold in 2014, and the entity officially dissolved in 2023, leaving behind an industrial narrative of a complex that once taught a region how to see through walls.
