Shiping No. 35 Sanyuan Street Residence
Yunnan, China
The Duan Ruochu Residence, located at No. 35 Sanyuan Street, stands as a quiet anchor in the historic core of Yilong Town, Shiping County, Yunnan Province, China. Built during the Republic of China era between 1912 and 1949, this private home belonged to Duan Ruochu. It represents the traditional Southern Yunnan residential architectural style, constructed from regional timber and sturdy masonry.
The builders shaped the local wood and laid the stone blocks to fit directly into the traditional urban layout of Sanyuan Street. Today, the streetfront facade remains fully integrated into the neighborhood. Visitors walking past can touch the weathered timber posts and see the hand-cut masonry that has survived decades of seasonal rains and dry winters. The house sits in the immediate vicinity of other key landmarks, including the Sanyuan Palace and the Su Family Ancestral Temple, forming a dense cluster of historical memory.
In November 2011, the Shiping County Government recognized the building's historical value, designating it as a county-level protected cultural relic site within the sixth batch of local heritage listings. Four years later, in 2015, the surrounding Shiping Old Town historical district gained national prominence, earning recognition as part of the first batch of National Historical and Cultural Blocks in China.
The physical structure of the Duan Ruochu Residence tells a story of local craftsmanship. The scent of aged wood still lingers in the courtyard, and the alignment of the streetfront windows reflects the domestic life of a family in the early twentieth century. By preserving these timber beams and masonry walls, the residence keeps the material history of Southern Yunnan accessible to the modern public, offering a direct connection to the daily life of old Shiping County.
