Shiping Lv Family Residence
Honghe, Yunnan, China
In 1935, the wealthy merchants of the Lv clan built a grand, south-facing estate in Taocun Village, located in Yilong Town within Yunnan's Shiping County. This complex covers fifteen hundred square meters of land and contains twenty-five hundred square meters of floor space. The architecture reflects the high status of its builders through three interconnected courtyards. The East Courtyard rises as a two-story, three-entry residence. Beside it, the Middle and West Courtyards feature two-story structures with corridor-connected corners, allowing residents to walk the entire upper perimeter under the shelter of the eaves.
Human hands left deep marks across these structures. Local artists brushed traditional Chinese calligraphy and painted murals directly onto the wooden beams and plaster walls. The scent of aged pine still lingers in the corridors. In the 1950s, the estate changed functions. The private merchant home became the busy headquarters of the local People's Commune, where farmers gathered to organize agricultural labor. Later, township government clerks occupied the rooms, typing reports and filing documents under the painted ceilings.
When the government offices relocated after regional mergers, the rooms fell silent, yet the estate remained structurally intact. Today, the cool plaster walls and creaking wooden floors are being prepared for a new chapter. Local planners are introducing a guesthouse and courtyard economy model to bring travelers into these historic spaces. Visitors can walk through the three courtyards, touch the smooth wooden pillars, and read the fading ink of the calligraphy, experiencing the quiet endurance of southern Yunnan's merchant golden age.
