Shiping County Christian Church
Honghe, Yunnan, China
In 1932, a female missionary from the Seventh-day Adventist Church arrived in Shiping County, where she gathered a small community of thirty local believers. Over the following decades, the congregation gradually established a lasting presence in the historic town. In early 1949, with support from the Kunming Diocese, the community purchased a traditional residential courtyard at No. 48 Nanzheng Street.
When the property was returned to the congregation in September 1993, the building had fallen into disrepair. In November of that year, members began restoring the neglected courtyard by clearing accumulated dust, repairing the wooden beams, and renewing the masonry. By December 25, 1993, the restored building welcomed its first Christmas service in decades, returning the courtyard to religious use.
The architecture itself reflects this process of adaptation. The original chapel occupied a traditional Chinese courtyard dwelling, with timber framing and tiled roofs adapted to accommodate Christian worship. Rather than replacing the historic domestic structure entirely, the congregation incorporated it into a new religious setting, allowing elements of local vernacular architecture to remain part of the community's spiritual life.
Today, the congregation worships at No. 42 Cibatou Lane in Yilong Town, where a dedicated main sanctuary stands alongside administrative offices and training facilities. The present campus serves as a gathering place for the local Christian community and continues the congregation's long connection with Shiping.
From the small gathering of thirty believers in 1932 to the community that worships here today, the church preserves a history shaped by faith, adaptation, and continuity. Its story is held not only in its buildings, but also in the rituals and collective memories carried from one generation to the next.
