Shantou Station
Shantou, Guangdong, China
Shantou Station stands as a massive gateway to eastern Guangdong, its architecture shaped by the sea. The newly opened East Station building, completed in September 2024, spans 11 platforms and 24 tracks. Its undulating roofline mimics the rhythmic flow of ocean currents, grounding the modern transit hub in the region's maritime heritage.
Twenty-two structural columns line the exterior, translating the traditional local qilou—or arcade—style into towering modern forms. These wave columns feature an advanced lighting system that breathes with the city. Bands of coastal white light ascend the pillars, simulating the rise and fall of the tide. The building responds directly to the people inside it. An interactive system monitors real-time passenger flow, shifting the facade's color as crowds gather. When hourly passenger volumes cross 10,000, the exterior lights transition to a deep orange inspired by traditional Shantou mosaic art, reaching full saturation as the station fills with travelers.
The station has evolved significantly since its original opening in 1995 as the terminus of the Guangzhou–Meizhou–Shantou railway. Today, it operates 200 daily trains, linking Shantou to major cities across China. The building functions as a living machine, merging local history with high-speed connectivity to move hundreds of thousands of people across the country.
