Residence of Miss Liang in Weishan

In 1914, the caravan leader Liang Meisheng built a grand residence at No. 21 Renwen Lane in Weishan for his eldest daughter. He designed it as a sanctuary where she could live and recruit a husband.

Visitors experience the house through a guided, room-by-room journey. A guide unbolts each door with a heavy brass key, revealing a sequential layout where rooms open directly into one another. The air carries the scent of old pine and cold stone. Inside, the museum displays over 20,000 artifacts spanning from the Neolithic era to the Republic period. Many of these objects sit openly without glass cases, inviting visitors to touch the history. You can feel the cold iron of caravan saddle bells, trace the deep grooves of Ming dynasty woodblocks, and run your fingers along the polished wood of Miss Liang’s original bridal canopy bed.

The architecture itself tells a story of cultural exchange. Built in the traditional Bai ethnic style of three wings and a central screen wall, the mansion features a screen wall inlaid with a natural marble landscape. The gatehouse displays a striking hybrid of styles, combining Western triangles with Chinese floral carvings. Overhead, the window lattices show scenes of fishermen, woodcutters, and scholars, carved by artisans whose chisel marks remain visible in the grain. In the wedding hall, a plaque depicting five bats welcoming longevity hangs above the space where a young bride once waited. This house remains a living record of Weishan, preserved by a family's devotion to the physical remnants of the past.
