Qiqihar Miaofa Chan Monastery
Qiqihar, Heilongjiang, China
Beside the sweeping currents of the Nenjiang River in Qiqihar stands the Miaofa Chan Monastery, a sprawling complex that literally rose from the depths of the earth. The monastery’s story begins in 2002 in nearby Haiya Village, where Master Shi Xuanyi first established a modest site for religious practice on artificial backfill. As the community of followers grew, the original space quickly became inadequate. In 2006, the congregation secured a new location south of Hong'an Park in the Fula'erji District. The new site presented a massive physical challenge: it was a vast pit, plunging seven meters deep into the ground. Over the next eight years, monks and lay volunteers worked to fill the crater and construct a 210,000-square-meter sanctuary.
Today, the completed monastery features classic Ming and Qing dynasty architectural styles, defined by striking red walls, sweeping flying eaves, and golden roofs that catch the northern sunlight. Visitors arriving at the Mountain Gate are greeted by two massive, six-tusked white marble elephants. Inside, the grounds unfold in a deliberate, traditional sequence. The Heavenly King Hall houses copper-cast, gold-leafed statues of Maitreya, Skanda, and the Four Heavenly Kings. Further in, the Mahavira Hall anchors the complex, while the Guanyin Hall holds an astonishing collection of nearly 63,000 individual statues of the bodhisattva of compassion. Above the courtyards, an 18-meter-tall solid copper statue of Amitabha Buddha watches over the grounds.
The physical grandeur of Miaofa Chan Monastery supports a deeply active spiritual community. Guided by the principle to continue the Buddha's wisdom life, the temple serves over 50,000 practitioners. The monks and volunteers organize regular Dharma assemblies and run extensive charitable programs, funding education and assisting individuals with disabilities. Open daily from morning until mid-afternoon, the monastery offers a quiet space for reflection and a clear view of a community built through collective devotion and sheer physical endurance.
