Qi's Western-Style Mansion
Honghe, Yunnan, China
Along the waterfront of Xiaogui Lake in Jianshui County, Yunnan Province, Qi's Western-Style Mansion stands as a monument to early Chinese capitalism. Built during the Republic of China era between 1912 and 1949, this two-story residence belonged to Qi Keqin, a wealthy local merchant who helped pioneer national industry in Lin'an Town. Located on Jishi Street within the Taishixiang Neighborhood, the structure covers over one thousand square meters, with some historical records suggesting a footprint of up to fifteen hundred square meters.
The mansion represents a deliberate fusion of Chinese and Western architectural traditions. Builders combined local construction techniques with foreign design elements, creating a sprawling layout with numerous individual rooms. On October 21, 2016, the People's Government of Honghe Prefecture recognized this architectural significance, officially listing the mansion as a prefecture-level cultural relics protection unit.
Today, the historic home has transitioned into a contemporary public space. It houses a specialty coffee establishment that respects the building's original design. Visitors sit in semi-private seating areas that preserve the original layout of the rooms. The rich aroma of freshly brewed coffee drifts through the corridors, blending with the cool breeze coming off the water. On both the first and second floors, the original waterfront balconies remain open to the public. Guests standing on these wooden decks can look out over the wide, shimmering vistas of Xiaogui Lake and the surrounding town, experiencing the same view that Qi Keqin enjoyed a century ago.
